Poetic phrasing – The Strad

TATJANA VASSILJEVA, winner of the first prize in the 2001 Rostropovich Competition in Paris, has forceful things to say in Chopin’s Cello Sonata with pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger (Mirare MIR 107). This intensity of feeling, coupled with her full sound and poetic phrasing make this a striking interpretation. Alkan’s Sonate de concert op.47, a brave pairing, also receives a convincing performance. In the haunting Adagio, prefaced by a verse from the prophet Micah, Vassiljeva paints a very effective tone colour high up on the lower strings, and in the pyrotechnics of the finale, which might have frightened off less virtuosic cellists, the ensemble appears effortlessly immaculate.
